Last Tuesday I woke up to a discovery that left me desolated, one of my photos had been stolen to be published it in a magazine. It may seem an overreaction, but it really affected me much more than I thought.
Some time ago I took some pictures of a girl who is an artisan. The session was free and the only condition that I had was that she could use those photos as long as she respected my watermark and named me as the photographer.
An important design magazine has done a report to this girl in which one of my photos comes out. Not only was I not asked for permission nor named in the text, but they also cut out the image to remove my signature and copyright mark.
What I don’t know is how far it has been the girl I photographed or from the magazine.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t intend to charge for it or have them remove that photo. The only thing I would like is to see my name on the picture. It’s just horrible how there are professionals who step on the work of their colleagues by profession without any regard.
Right now I have no idea what I should do. As I said, it is an important magazine and I don’t want to put those designer against myself.
There are several things I have learned from this unpleasant experience:
- You NEVER work for free.
- All artistic creation MUST BE REGISTERED.
- The watermark must be placed in the middle of the image or in a place that cannot be eliminated.
Unfortunately, what has happened to me has happened to most creative professionals once. How do we pretend that people respect and value our work when our own colleagues do not?
I’m trying hard to see the good side of this expresidente. On the one hand, it is not one of my favourite pictures nor one of the ones that has taken much effort or working hours. On the other hand, at least a prestigious design magazine has liked my work as much as to publish it.
What do you think I should do? Any advice would help a lot.
The picture above is not the one that was stolen, in fact it’s not even mine. It is from a free image stock called pexels. As you can see one can get pretty nice images for free without having to step on others’ work.
